Image : http://www.flickr.com

If you want to keep your skin in great condition and get younger looking skin, it’s a lot easier and less expensive than you may think.

You don’t need expensive beauty creams, you can simply follow the tips below and you will have great looking younger skin, thats radiant and glowing.

1. Protect

It doesn’t what day cream you use, for younger looking skin you need to have one that has an SPF 15 level of protection.

This goes for days when the sun is not high in the sky.

Sun damage is the major cause of premature skin aging.

You don’t need expensive creams.

One that has SPF 15 for the day and for the night, simply one that you feel comfortable with and is absorbed easily into your skin type, is all you need.

You can spend a few dollars, to several hundred dollars on skin creams, however there will be little difference between them in terms of protecting your skin.

One of the biggest myths of all is nourishing the skin from the outside.

The stories are great and sound convincing, but it’s a shame they don’t work!

If you want to nourish your skin you do it from the inside.

The foods you eat are important. Don’t fall for the hype of the multi billion pound advertising of eternal youth from a pot of cream.

2. Foods to keep your skin young

Multigrain bread

To get plenty of selenium to zap free radicals, which when they get into the body can break down collagen.

Other good foods are shrimps, brazil nuts and sunflower seeds.

Oats

Oats contain silicic acid that is responsible for making the spongy like cells that lie between collagen and the elastin fibres of the skin.

This plumps up the skin making it look more youthful and are great for holding back fine lines.

Alternatives are whole grain wheat, Alfalfa the latter which is a popular supplement.

Goji berries & Muesli

The former contains lots of vitamin C (as do other berries) but these contain 500 times more vitamin C gram for gram than oranges, so you get a potent dose and finally, Muesli for Vitamin E.

These vitamins are great for zapping free radicals and protecting the skin naturally from sun damage.

Other good foods for vitamin C are (other berries as stated above) oranges and grapefruit.

For Vitamin E look for sweet potatoes, Sunflower seeds spinach and avocado or you can take evening primrose oil.

As a general rule you should get at least 3 – 5 servings of fruit and vegetables per day.

Great meats

Get plenty of oily fish and aim for 5 servings per week.

Great sources include: Mackerel, salmon, sardines, herrings and salmon.

These fish contain omega 3. This essential fat helps form prostaglandins which are responsible for keeping the skin subtle and hydrated.

Steak

Lean steak is great for supplying iron an essential nutrient. If you don’t like steak, then you can have mackerel, sardines or dark turkey meat, as an alternative.

Crab

A great source of copper which is an essential mineral for the formation melatin which helps reduce the formation of age spots one of the tell tale signs of skin aging.

Beef, sardines, mussels, lobster and sunflower seeds are also good sources.

Last but not least

3. Drink water and lots of it

We can’t live without it and it’s essential to get plenty to hydrate your skin and flush out impurities. So get 2 – 3 litres a day.

Do the above and

Your skin will look younger and more radiant and you will delay the signs of aging.

One final note, the bulk of the work to keep your skin young comes from the inside, Not the outside.

So forget the miracle creams, nourish from the inside and protect with SPF from the outside and you will have beautiful, radiant, younger looking skin.

Types of Acne Solutions, Containing Treatment Forms

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Almost everyone has been plagued with some type of acne or at least a rogue blemish that was set on ruining the day. Teenagers are the ones who run into problems with acne most often, due to increase in oil on their skin. However, there are acne solutions for anyone who experiences difficulties with even the slightest bit of acne. Blemishes have been around long enough that products offered include; face masks, scrubs, medicated pads, chemical peels, topical ointments, abrasive treatments, and prescription medication. Each of these products has a different function.

Face Mask:

Various substances are added to masks to achieve a drying effect. Natural face masks use mud as a base and then combine eucalyptus or peppermint for a cooling effect. Some masks have a clay base to them and can draw out quite a bit of oil.

Scrub:

Scrubs are used to exfoliate the skin, thus unclogging pores. Clogged pores are a huge cause of all sorts of acne. Most scrubs contain crushed up walnut shells, ground up apricot seeds, or pieces of pumice that will help to slough off any dead skin cells and keep pores clear. Besides the bits of shell, seed, or pumice, these scrubs also have a cooling effect and/or a moisturizer added to them.

Medicated Pad:

Many medicated pads are also slightly abrasive. This combination allows for the face to be scrubbed as medication is being applied. The solution added to these pads usually contains salicylic acid, which is a common product used in most acne products. These are very handy when traveling, since the pads come already doused in the solution and are easy to use.

Chemical Peel:

Peels are applied to the face in gel form and then are peeled off once they firm up. This gel gets into the pores of the skin and then helps to unclog each pore as it is peeled off. Many spas will combine this process with the abrasive treatment listed below for severe cases of acne.

Topical Ointment:

There are lotions that are applied topically to the skin for controlling acne and some thicker creams are available for targeting specific blemishes. These are usually a basic lotion or cream that contains salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. The latter chemical compound is useful in preventing acne, when applied before the blemish actually surfaces.

Abrasive Treatment:

Some people find this treatment to be a bit harsh, but it is extremely useful for getting a handle on severe acne. Spas offer this type of treatment for a pricey fee or home treatments are able to be performed for less cost.

Prescription Medication:

There are some forms of acne that just won’t respond to any of the above solutions. Prescription medication is offered to individuals who have difficulty with severe acne.

While using a basic cleanser in the morning and night might be enough for many people, there are individuals who seek out the alternate acne solutions described above. Thanks to the combinations available today, scarring from acne is much less common.

Home Decorating Ideas – How to Decorate Tropical Style

Artistry Articles No Comments

Image : http://www.flickr.com

I reside in a warm, sunny climate and most days are filled with sunshine, palm trees, beautiful ocean waters and colorful flowers. For many folks, myself included, there is something about the warm, sunny tropical environment that lifts our spirits. And, decorating our homes in tropical, or Florida style is quite simple, as many retail establishments have a large selection of related home decor items to select.

What can be done if you want that same tropical sunshine feel in your home but you don’t live in my area of the world? Or, you may reside in a warm climate, but want to do something more creative than palm tree pictures and place mats. Whatever the situation, you can create a beautiful tropical home decor that uniquely expresses your lifestyle.

First, determine what room or area of your home is going to be part of this decorating project, and then decide what your budget is going to be. It is critical that you address these two important points before doing anything else. If you are decorating on a budget, which most of us are, that will dictate your approach to this tropical transformation.

Tropical colors can be bold and beautiful, in shades of blue, green, coral, turquoise, purple and yellow, so if you love color, this is a great decorating style for you. Conversely, you can create a beautiful tropical decor with soft colors as well, so there is no definite ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ path for you to take when it comes to color choices. I’ve had success with the following color palette, and although it is different than the color schemes mentioned above it worked very well. The walls of the guest bedroom were painted a medium shade of bronze-brown, floors were bamboo wood, window treatment was a simple off-white sheer tied back with a delicate silk leaf greenery, ceiling fan with faux bamboo paddles, simple palm tree sketches with brown frames on the walls, slim silk palm tree in the corner and a taupe iron bed with bedspread in cream, green and brown with a muted palm tree pattern. The understated theme of this room did not shout ‘tropical style’, but the color and accessory combinations worked very well in my Florida style home.

You may decide to bring the tropical atmosphere into the room in a big way by using a bright, bold color on the walls of your room. Or, you may opt for a muted shade on your walls and use the bright colors for accents in the room. Remember that the tropics includes naturals, including trees, trees and more trees, so a beautiful, realistic looking silk (or real if your green thumb and location will allow) palm tree or something similar will always look great. Bear in mind that you really do get what you pay for with silks, so choose the best that your budget will afford.

Accessorize thoughtfully and creatively, trying to avoid the types of commercial and over-used pieces that you probably see elsewhere. Look for a unique lamp that has a tropical feel. Remember as you shop to look online, for there are many great sources for tropical themed rugs. Choose carefully because one unique area or entry rug could potentially become the focal point of your tropical theme. Or, you might find artwork with a standard tropical theme, but the framing or artistry makes it stand out as unique and unduplicated.

Window treatments can include plantation shutters, wood blinds, lightweight fabrics and fun print valances, depending upon your style preferences. Avoid heavy, dark draping styles, as they are contrary to a tropical decor.

The same thought is applicable to the overall feel and look of the room. The upholstered furniture does not have to be wicker and white, but it should have a light overall ‘feel’ and appearance. For example, if you are striving for a tropical look to your room’s decor, a navy blue and hunter green plaid sofa will probably not create the feel you are seeking. A sea foam green sofa with a combination of cream and coral accent pillows will take you in the tropical, or Florida style, direction.

Determine your tropical color scheme and how you will apply it to your room, shop for unique and notable (not necessarily expensive!) pieces, include natural textures, refrain from over-accessorizing, and you will be on your way to creating a beautiful Florida style decor, no matter where you live.

Polynesian Tattoo Designs – What You Need to Know

Artistry Articles No Comments

Image : http://www.flickr.com

There are thousands of tattoo designs to choose from on websites and in catalogs. Tattoos in general are becoming more popular these days and it is tribal Polynesian designs that are becoming increasingly more common.

You need to understand that there are two distinct styles when is comes to Polynesian tattoo designs. The first of these is called Etua. Etua have a strong spiritual and religious meaning to them. They are also magical symbols offering protection from the gods . While the other style Enata can be described as natural designs which describe the person, there identity and status. This includes their social level, island of origin, occupation and history.

Symbols within Polynesian tattoo designs and their meaning are as follows -

Shark teeth – Sharks’ teeth tattoos are for protection.
Turtles – A turtle symbol represents long life and fertility.
Shells – Shells are a symbol of prosperity to the Polynesian people and it is possible that they were used as the earliest form of currency.
Sharks – The shark itself is seen as sacred. Polynesian shark tattoos are used as a symbol of protection from threats.
Gecko – It is believed that the gecko has powers of a supernatural nature and are feared but also held in awe by the Polynesians. It is also believed that if a green gecko laughs then it is an awful omen of bad fortune and illness.
Tiki – The god Tiki is often shown with eyes closed. This is because Tiki is able to smell trouble before it is seen.

The people of the Polynesian islands are spread far and wide. They include The Cook Islands, Samoa , Tonga, Easter Island, Tahiti, French Polynesia and even Hawaii. The people across these islands developed into there own distinct cultures over thousands of years. However what is fascinating is the cultural similarities that developed especially in the practice of tattoo artistry. However Polynesian tattoo designs of today do not mean as much in this day and age as people love them for the design rather than magical protection or a statement of status.

How to Hide Deep Wrinkles

Artistry Articles No Comments

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Deep wrinkles can be hard to deal with. Not only do they affect your self confidence, your self esteem and your personal appearance, but they also can create and exacerbate other skin problems.

Oddly enough, considering what a major role these types of wrinkles play in many men’s and women’s daily lives, you would think that they would be more directly targeted by more cosmetic and cosmeceutical companies. However, while many products claim to eliminate wrinkles and restore skin to its youthful vigor, few actually have any impact on serious, ingrained lines.

Fortunately, there are ways to deal with them, hide them and even repair them. You just have to look for the right types of products to help you do the job.

Read the Ingredients

The ingredients of a product will tell you far more clearly than any other part of the packaging exactly what the product is intended to do. Ingredients like vitamins C and E, idebenone and other healing or restorative compounds of this nature indicate that the cream is intended to actually repair skin.

Hard core moisturizing elements are good for prevention, but generally they will only repair fine lines and shallow wrinkles, leaving your deep wrinkles relatively unaffected. This is not to say that you should avoid them, only that you should not buy a product whose main ingredients are intended to restore moisture-holding capacity rather than repair existing tears in the skin.

Look for Reflective Agents

If you’re looking for a good product to hide your furrows, then look for makeup and skin care products that contain reflective elements. Deep lines are made even more pronounced by the shadows that they create. A product that reflects light away from the inside “walls” of the lines can make these facial creases literally “disappear” – at least until you wash your face – completely.

Target Cumulative Healing Results

If you’re searching for a permanent solution for your furrows, then you need to seek a treatment that has cumulative results over time. Products that have these kinds of results often receive “bad” reviews from users who were hoping for immediate results or dramatic, overnight effects.

However, deep lines took time to form, and they take time to eliminate as well. Otherwise, you will simply be hiding or temporarily altering the appearance of your wrinkles without actually achieving anything. While this is sufficient for some people, there are products out there that can restore your skin and make it unnecessary for you to hide your deep wrinkles any longer.

Hair Highlighting 101

Artistry Articles No Comments

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Highlighting can add the illusion of depth, volume and texture to your hair. The process involves coloring some strands of your hair – making it lighter or darker, depending on your overall look (color of your skin, eyes, hair) and your desired look. Your highlights should compliment your natural color, not giving it an odd contrast or contrived color. Highlighting is also a great way to start if you have doubts in coloring or dying your hair.

Three things to remember before highlighting:

1. Go light or go home

Usually, in using a color for highlights, you go two or three shades lighter than your original hair color. Going beyond three shades will look extremely unnatural and peculiar.

2. Condition your hair to avoid drying

Deep condition your hair or use a clarifying treatment at least three days before highlighting because some chemicals in hair color can seriously dry your hair. After coloring, some prefer to shampoo immediately after. But, it is better to shampoo your hair a day after – this will help maintain the color.

3. Consider lowlights

You also have the option to have lowlights with your highlights which can give your hair more dimension. Lowlights make your hair darker in shade. It will make the top of your hair look heavier than the bottom. But, it is best to go to your professional stylist when trying both highlights and lowlights.

Tips for hair highlighting

- Mix two or more colors. Experiment and be creative. Just remember to use the color mix once you combine them.

- If you bought a highlighting kit, you can observe that the brush they use don’t really give you much control. Flat acrylic brushes measuring ½ – ¼ inch, which can be bought at art supply or hardware stores, give you a better grip thus making the highlights look more natural.

- Always protect your skin from hair color because it contains chemicals that can be damaging.

- Use latex gloves and make sure they fit snugly.

- Apply highlights only to the top layer of your head to create that depth and dimension you want to achieve.

Streaking

Streaking is used for a sleeker and glossier effect. You can go for half-head or full-head. Half-head streaking gives your hair brighter effects done really close to the hairline. This is done through bleaching and wrapping small or thick strands of your hair in foil paper.

While whole-head streaking involves bleaching and coloring the entire head, thus producing a blonde effect. Darker streaks are placed closer to the hairline. Both procedures need a touch-up every six to eight weeks before growth of new hair becomes noticeable.

D-I-Y streaking is another method used for dry hair. Best results are seen for medium-brown to light-brown hair. A streaking kit is available at the shop, but it should include a rat-tail brush, toothbrush, a non-metal bowl for the bleach, foil paper and a couple of clips.

To do, part a thin portion of your hair at the top part of the head using the comb. Place a 5 cm foil strip under it. Take the toothbrush with bleach and swathe over the parted hair. Cover it with foil strip. Take another part of the hair about 1.25 cm below and continue the process until the desired effect is achieved.

Check the color of the wrapped hair – it should be golden. If not, reapply bleach and leave for a couple of minutes. While taking out the foil wraps, ask a friend to help you rinse with warm water to take off the bleach. Apply shampoo and conditioner after unveiling the wraps.

Finger painting

Finger painting is a method for a subtler effect. Run four fingers from your hairline to the back of the crown after dipping it in bleaching solution. Do it as if pushing back the hair from your face. Don’t forget to use gloves. Follow the instructions at the back of the carton, like how long to leave the hair before rinsing, shampooing and conditioning.

Shampoos

The most practical and cost effective way to extend the duration of your highlights is the use of color tinted shampoos. Since these are temporary, you just stop using a certain color of shampoo if you don’t like it or if you want to try other colors. You can even use them on their own, although the effect will be less.

Amish Artistry & Mission Furniture

Artistry Articles No Comments

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The merging of Amish artistry and Mission style furniture is a flawless union. The Amish have been known as expert craftsmen for over 300 years and Americans have celebrated solid wood Mission furniture for over a century. Amish furniture makers, famous for crafting heirloom pieces, have found Mission furniture desirable because of its timelessness, straight lines and clean design. The appeal of the hard woods and the unassuming agelessness of this southwestern inspired design make collecting these pieces irresistible and a rewarding investment.

A true piece of Americana, Mission furniture first became popularized around 1895. Mission style began evolving alongside the burgeoning Arts and Crafts movement that was happening in both Britain and America. The origin of Mission furniture is said to have begun in a chair spotted at Swedenborgian Church of the New Jerusalem in San Francisco. New York furniture manufacturer and retailer, Joseph McHugh is often credited with having found the appeal of primitive looking chairs at the Spanish mission style church and using the word “mission” to describe the new line of furniture he was inspired to create based on the chairs. The Arts & Crafts movement developing at this time was motivated by artisans revolting against the mass, machine-produced products created by the Industrial Revolution and the cluttered excess of the Victorian interior designers. The back to basics handiwork of Mission furniture became a prominent part of Arts & Crafts history.

The revolt against dehumanized production led to groups like The Society of Arts and Crafts who influenced turn of the century artists and craftsmen to produce their highest quality of work. The Mission decorating scheme was truly America’s greatest contribution to this return to quality versus quantity in design and crafts. Just like the Amish, these turn of the century artisans, craftsmen and women were seeking integrity, quality and simplicity in their handmade products. The mandate to “develop and encourage higher standards in the handicrafts,” set forth on June 28, 1897, by The Society of Arts and Crafts, is exactly what the Amish woodworkers consistently do to this day.

Amish workmanship and Mission designs were purposely created to endure. The intent for multiple generations to enjoy and pass down heirloom quality furniture is obvious in both. The original modesty of form in the Mission designer’s objectives is ideally suited to the Amish craftsmanship. The irony of modern mission-style mass manufacturers is that the original ideals of the movement have been lost in mass production. The Amish, however, still specialize in constructing heirloom quality furniture; carrying on the simplistic, honest and high quality designs of the craftsmen of Mission furniture for the last one hundred years. Amish furniture has always been crafted in select 100% wood and like Mission designs is known for its sustainability and undecorated, simple appeal. The Mission furniture’s architecture allows the beauty of the woods and the true craftsmanship of joinery to be exposed and enjoyed. Hand in hand with Amish character, Mission furniture is classical and unmistakable in design. With the often simple slatted construction of many of the Mission furniture pieces, even the most subtle is pleasing to the eye and fits in many a décor scheme.
